An Intentional Life
With all the AI overwhelm I am revisiting the idea of an intentional life. By intentional I mean - lean, focused, free of distraction, deep, present. A life which embodies the saying - less is more.
A life with a low dopamine tolerance. An undistracted, fully present mind. A life deeply connected to a few simple, yet deep values.
This would reduce dopamine — making simple things more interesting, making us more sensitive to life, able to perceive more, improving imagination and creativity. This kind of life reduces dopamine tolerance, reduces stimulation. A slower, more present life allows us to enjoy things we might otherwise overlook. Like the fact that we are alive. We come more into touch with the everyday miracles of life.
In the modern world, this kind of life requires discipline. It isn't easy to shut out the algorithms designed to keep you hooked. It isn't easy to put down the devices designed for addiction. It isn't easy to focus, or slow down. It isn't easy to uproot these unhealthy habits.
Even before all the tech, we still had our minds. Our minds which don't stop racing. Our minds which don't let go, which long for power and control and speed. Even without the tech we are constantly scrolling internally.
To choose a life like this is not easy. It requires discipline. It requires you to fail and learn over and over again.
But, if you value your sanity, it might be your best shot.
